History of National Capital Region (NCR)
Metro Manila was once a part of a larger province called Rizal. Before it became its own administrative region, Metro Manila was just one of the 13 municipalities in the province of Rizal.
The area was officially separated from Rizal in 1975 and was renamed the National Capital Region.
Manila was heavily damaged during World War II. During the Battle of Manila in 1945, the city was bombed heavily by American and Filipino forces as they attempted to recapture the city from the occupying Japanese forces. The battle lasted for about a month and resulted in the death of tens of thousands of civilians.
After the war, the city was rebuilt and modernized, but some of the historic buildings and landmarks were lost forever.
